1905 John B. Stetson Hat Co. Palm Bros Co Beveled Glass Sign
A rare find indeed! Early 20th Century (circa 1905) Decalcomania Beveled Glass Sign. It was made by the Palm Bros & Co of New York, Cincinnati, and Chicago. Stetson begin making hats after he returned from the West Coast around 1865, when he was 35 years old. He settled in Philadelphia and was originally from New Jersey, where his father was a hat maker. This rare sign, while not in perfect condition, is still complete enough for any grade collection. What it lacks in perfection, it makes up in Western Americana Value! Wow! An original John B. Stetson glass sign! The process the Palm Brothers used on these early signs was “decalcomania”. The term “decalcomania” was often used to describe a drawing, design, or pattern that could be moved from one surface to another through direct contact, and the decorative technique itself was well known, both terms were usually associated with chinaware and pottery decoration. Yet industrial transfers, applied for example to railway stock or commercial vehicles, were not as common. In this regard the collection is a valuable resource, allowing for the analyses of printmaking techniques of the late nineteenth century, such as the lithographic process, as well as studies of industrial object design and the early graphic arts.
