RARE 1911 Coca-Cola 2 Ladies Bottle & Glass Cardboard Trolley Car Sign COKE
RARE 1911 Coca-Cola 2 Ladies with Bottle and Glass Cardboard Trolley Car Sign! This is the FIRST trolley car sign that Coca-Cola encourages people to DEMAND the FULL brand name instead of using the word "COKE" as it was thought that "nicknames encourage substitution"!
It was manufactured by the Kettinglinus Lithography Company of Philadelphia. It was the 6th trolley car sign Coca-Cola produced, the first being in 1905.
There are some condition issues with it. There are nail holes in it and the corners are nicked up. Keep in mind, this is ephemera and not intended to have a long life, especially while in use on a trolley car. It is very typical to see these “nail” holes. Actually, these are NOT nail holes, but “ice pick” holes. It is my understanding that replacing trolley car signs involved two people, one who poked it with an ice pick to drag it to the opening to remove it. And the other person to assist with taking the old one and handing the new one to the first person. (If you have any other knowledge of this process, please share!)
